From Strategy to Reality | Re-imagining the future of sports organizations
commercial strategy
D2C strategy
digital transformation

The trajectory of a sports organization’s business activities requires vision and clarity in order to deliver sustainable revenue growth, reduce unnecessary operational costs, and maintain performance standards. Whether its objective is to generate more value through fan engagement, broaden its geography and scope for delivering major events, or simply to optimize its workflows, strategic development is a fundamental and productive exercise on a rights holder’s jobs list – itself the driving force behind every decision made within an organization’s evolution.

While table stakes throughout the sports industry’s transformation, understanding the first steps to strategy planning is never a straightforward endeavor. It requires sports organizations to self-analyze and identify within themselves the opportunities for transformation and growth. Whereas, without first understanding market trends and forecasting returns on the company’s investments (ROI), it’s more difficult for rights holders to identify areas of their organization that require the most attention and which will reap the highest rewards.

By way of example, according to N3XT Sports research, and perhaps unsurprisingly, top-flight European football clubs own a higher digital, data and technological maturity within their performance space compared to other business verticals. Meanwhile, the ownership of direct-to-consumer (D2C) media platforms, for example, is something the vast majority of clubs have invested in greatly in recent years – yet many have not fully integrated their portfolios across their wider business strategies and into their respective data ecosystems.

As the industry explores growth opportunities, strategic development is not limited to its technological advancement and adopting solutions which promise the greatest impact; true innovation within a sports property spans multiple verticals including challenges posed by organizational restructuring and optimizing internal operations. This also involves the exploration of new revenue streams through business-model transformation, personalized fan engagements which nurture lasting customer relationships, and building brand reputation.

N3XT Sports Strategy & Consulting department separates these challenges into different streams of strategic development, covering the five key ‘R’s of a sports organization’s strategic performance and planning:

  • Revenue generation & Re-imagining new realities: expert business planning and business-model innovation helps organizations anticipate and ready themselves for future market trends, social and economic shifts, while assessing their audience demands and changing fan behaviors. This extends to how event organizers and sports bodies measure their feasibility for delivering iconic major events, so as to identify opportunities for audience expansion and potential new revenue streams throughout the organization.
  • Re-defining organizational structure: governance-framework design, within a focused Target Operating Model, is essential for adapting organizational structures to new technology integration and transformation, while helping align business strategy with their operational resources and capabilities. As part of this re-structure, strategic employment-engagement and change-management programs optimize the transfer of knowledge, deployment of skills, and monitoring and reporting of company performance.
  • Risk Management & Reputation: legacy planning and risk management in sports requires the development and implementation of clear mitigation strategies which address everything from an organization’s environmental and social impact to its response to unforeseen societal or geopolitical events which may be disruptive or potentially damaging to the brand.

“Strategy development and planning covers many different pillars within the evolution of a sports business, including but also beyond its commercial and digital streams,” explains Eloi Pomé, N3XT Sports Strategy and Consulting lead. “As the industry prepares to meet future market trends, unforeseen societal shifts and challenges, and the innovations which will require new expertise and training, the organizations which will thrive recognise the direction they want to travel today and the strategic frameworks necessary to take them forward.”

360° Strategy Delivery | Anticipate, Transform & Implement

To maximize their ROI, sports properties are urged to take a more considered approach to their investments – wherever they are needed – including the development and delivery of a precise roadmap based on in-depth industry analysis and a thorough company audit. As part of this process, N3XT Sports supports its clients across three stages of strategy development, including how and when transformation is needed, as well as the resources and steps necessary for delivering a successful transition. These involve the organization’s power to:

  1. Anticipate: we help our clients develop a clear path forward by defining scenarios, outlining market and institutional forces, and assessing their strengths and weaknesses. It’s vital to ensure that the organization fully aligns on its direction and development goals to ensure its strategic vision is ‘future-ready’.
  2. Transform: throughout the fast-evolving world of sports, transformation is critical for empowering organizations to optimize their operations and turn their challenges into opportunities that provide long-lasting rewards. Strategy development requires a clear and dynamic approach to preparing people and the necessary infrastructure for change.
  3. Implement: in order to turn a company’s vision into reality, strategy implementation requires robust project-management (PMO) structures, helping manage risks with precision and providing specialized expertise to ensure our projects are executed on time and within budget, while maintaining agility and integrity to achieve the organization’s objectives.

“The key to a successful business strategy is its ability to allow the company to react and adapt, while helping its executives make the best decisions for the organization in any given situation,” Eloi continues. “As the sports industry navigates a saturated and unpredictable market in the age of digital consumption, it is essential for rights holders to develop strategic frameworks that serve the strength and durability of their business and to nurture trust and sustainable growth throughout their stakeholder ecosystem.”

Assessment & Delivery | Building your own tailor-made business strategy

N3XT Sports specializes in guiding leadership teams through their Vision Planning and Strategic Development, as part of a process built on robust analysis and collaborative workshops designed to articulate a clear and compelling direction for their organization. Aligned with this process, our team delivers a data-driven overview of the market landscape, including a focus on Market Sizing and Opportunity Assessment to identify the organization’s untapped potential and viable growth areas.

For example, in 2022, N3XT Sports was appointed to design and implement the Professional Footballers’ Association’s (PFA) data and digital transformation strategic plan, including the launch of its PFA Member Portal and PFA Employee Portal. As part of the process, N3XT Sports’ dedicated Digital Transformation department organized regular workshops and committee meetings with the PFA to enhance the employee-user experience and tailor the planning and delivery of its Employee Portal to specific staff workflows and preferences.

Furthermore, N3XT Sports completed a thorough assessment of the players’ union’s technological infrastructure, within the PFA’s digital audit, as well as a holistic situational analysis focused on the union’s personnel and their relationships with pre-existing internal processes and data. In carrying out gap analysis to piece together the PFA’s strategic digital roadmap, benchmarking enabled the project team to take inspiration from other leading industry bodies, for which the National Football League Players’ Association’s (NFLPA) and National Basketball Players’ Association’s (NBPA) provided transferrable insights.

“Our insights go beyond the surface level,” Eloi says, “providing our client with the strategic intelligence needed to anticipate market shifts, make confident decisions, and secure a leading position. We place a strong emphasis on stakeholder-engagement strategy with the aim of ensuring that from the boardroom to the front office, everyone understands and feels invested in the journey ahead.”

At N3XT Sports, we support our clients at every stage of their strategy development. The sports industry is transitioning from an era of siloed, instinct-based management to a "data-native" future. While many organizations view artificial intelligence (AI) purely as a tool for content generation or predictive fan analytics, its most profound impact lies in its ability to act as the "connective tissue" of a multi-stakeholder ecosystem. At N3XT Sports, we believe AI is the catalyst for moving beyond "data anarchy" towards a unified Operating System (OS) where strategy, digital [...]
